It might get your Significant Other to cycle with
you. Recumbents got my hubby, a former bicycle hater and couch
potato, to enjoy biking!
-
Your butt doesn't get sore.
-
You might lose weight because you can pedal
90 minutes to 2 hours on a bent and it doesn't feel like a workout (no
pain) but it is a good workout.
-
Recumbents work more muscles than upright bikes
do! In addition to quads, you work glutes, inner and outer
thighs, and hamstrings! So that means your metabolism goes up and
you can eat more at the 'after the ride' restaurant stop!
-
Your private parts don't get numb.
This evidentally happens to women also. One article in a cycling
publication described how one woman, after spending 90 minutes in the saddle
of a standard bicycle, had numbness in the southern region of her body
for 2 days after. I often spend 120 minutes or more, in the saddle
of my recumbent bicycle with no after-effects at all.
-
You see traffic (and scenery) better.
On a 'bent, you look straight ahead instead of downward.
-
Recumbents go faster than upright bikes!
This is because bents are more airodynamic. Did you know that the
fastest speed on a bicycle, 65 mph, was done on a recumbent? Also,
recumbents were banned from bike races in the 1930's because they were
outrunning the standard bicycles!
-
You don't have to wear special clothing on a 'bent.
You can ride in office attire because it's like sitting in a car - you
don't wear out or dirty clothing.
-
If you fall on a bent, you get less injury than on an upright, because
'bents are lower and you can put your feet down when you are stopped. Most
falls on 'bents can be avoided. (And this means.... no more ENDOs!)
:)
-
Your arms don't get numb on a 'bent.
It's like sitting in a car as far as comfort.
-
Ladies riding on the street don't get slapped on the butt by passing
cars if they are riding recumbents (they can't reach your butt!)
-
You don't get chaffed inner thighs riding on a 'bent
-
When you go to the gym, do you pick the recumbent
exer-cycles or the uprights?
-
It's easier to figure out what auto drivers are
going to do ... on a bent you sit about level
with auto drivers and you can look them in the face so you can more easily
predict their actions, if they see you etc.
-
The upright bicycle frame was invented over 100
years ago and it hasn't changed much since! But even if you
put a modern engine into a model T FORD body (invented 70 years ago),
would
you really select it for touring cross country rather than a car with
modern shocks, frame, tires etc?
-
The "touring" upright bicycle was invented for
touring... that is the "Tour de France"! It is maximized for
speed but minimized for comfort, afterall, the racing athletes are
not there for comfort. Recumbents were invented from the ground up
for touring long distances in comfort. Of course, many of the things 'bents
have, comfortable seat, shocks etc, are also found on motorcycles!
Bicycles are the only thing which has lagged behind times! (until
bents came on the scene!)
-
Most bike riders use a bicycle for touring and
not for racing! Haven't you ever wondered why many bike manufacturers
build bikes for the less than 5 percent of bikers who race them?
-
Just because you ride an upright, doesn't make
you Lance Armstrong. Not even close ... so wouldn't
you be better off getting a bike designed to ride (rather than race!)?
:)
